On Sunday, UConn capped off an undefeated regular season with an 85-49 victory over the St. John’s Red Storm at Madison Square Garden. The Huskies are now 31-0, winning all but one contest by double-digits while owning a nation-leading +37.9 average margin of victory. They’ve only trailed in 14 games for a total of 47:02 — and over a third of that came in a win at Villanova last month.
UConn has beaten four teams that are currently ranked and three others that have spent time in the top 25. In the latest bracket reveal on Sunday, the Huskies were projected as the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Despite all that, Geno Auriemma doesn’t believe the current UConn team is better than last season’s.
“I don't know that you take away one of the top five players in the WNBA off your team and say you're better,” he explained, referring to Paige Bueckers. “I don't know how I can justify saying that.”
“There are a lot of times when I watch us play and I say, ‘That wouldn't have happened if we had Paige,’” Auriemma added later. “So there are things that happen that maybe are not obvious or ascertained by other people. But on the coaching staff, we know.”
