It’s shaping up to be a quiet offseason for UConn. After all the attention and excitement that came with winning a national championship and bringing in two additions from the transfer portal a year ago, the last few weeks haven’t brought much to talk about.
The Huskies, who always keep their recruiting under wraps, haven’t shown much interest in anyone in the transfer portal. In theory, there’s still time — Kayleigh Heckel didn’t sign until May 20 — but the options are dwindling.
Unless UConn adds someone soon, there won’t be much news over the next month. The returning players are set to finish the spring semester by May 9 and will then return home. The next event on the calendar is summer workouts, which kick off in early June.
That break will have some benefits — I’ll be in Ireland for a wedding in a few weeks — but it also means there won’t be much to write about. That’ll leave plenty of opportunities for mailbags. The goal is to put one out every week or two, depending on the volume of questions. So if you missed out on this edition, reply to this email, send a query to [email protected] or leave a comment to submit a question for the next one.
Is UConn going after anyone in the transfer portal? — Ally S.
Probably not. UConn goes to great lengths to keep its recruiting efforts a secret but it’s still never this quiet. The Huskies seem comfortable passing on what’s considered a weak portal class. Most of the big names have already found a home at this point, too.
Maybe UConn finds an unheralded, under-the-radar player to bring in. But there are no obvious options like Serah Williams (who played for former UConn assistant Marisa Moseley at Wisconsin), Kaitlyn Chen (from Carla Berube’s Princeton program) or Lou Lopez Sénéchal (a local star at Fairfield).
