Fudd finally gets a homecoming

Azzi Fudd is finally getting a homecoming. Despite being in her fourth season at UConn, Saturday’s contest at Georgetown will be the first time she’s played in the area where she grew up. Fudd hails from Arlington, Virginia but went to high school across the Potomac in DC proper at St. John’s.

Every time the Huskies have traveled to the nation’s capital, she’s been injured. They never even faced the Hoyas on the road in 2021-22 after a Covid outbreak in the team prompted a cancelation, though Fudd was out with a foot issue anyways. The next season, she re-injured her knee at home vs. the Hoyas and missed the return trip in February. Last season, Fudd tore her ACL before the third game of the season and sat out the remainder of the campaign.

At long last, she’ll finally get a chance to take the court in DC for the first time since her high school days.

“I'm super excited to get to play with all my family and friends in the crowd,” Fudd said. “I played on that court — actually my high school state championship game. So it's a cool little flashback moment, full circle moment.”

It’s not just that Fudd will be playing back home, either. She’ll also be going up against Georgetown where her mom, then Katie Smrcka-Duffy, played three seasons from 1998-2001. In that time, she was a three-time All-Big East selection while averaging 18.6 points per game. She also faced off against UConn five times — which the staff highlighted when recruiting Fudd.

“On one of my visits, the coaches made a little highlight tape of my mom when they played UConn,” Fudd relayed. “I thought that was really, really cool to see her actually playing for Georgetown.”

All in all, Saturday is set to be a special day for the redshirt senior.
