For the second year in a row, the Dallas Wings used the top pick on UConn’s top guard. On Monday, Azzi Fudd became the seventh player in program history to be selected first overall in the WNBA Draft. She’ll join Paige Bueckers in Dallas, who also went No. 1 one year ago.
Sarah Strong earns consensus National Player of the Year honors
On Friday, Sarah Strong won the Wooden Award, making her the consensus National Player of the Year after she also took home the Naismith Trophy, Wade Trophy, Associated Press and USBWA honors.
Strong is the ninth consensus National Player of the Year in program history, joining Rebecca Lobo (1995), Sue Bird (2002), Diana Taurasi (2003), Maya Moore (2009, 2011), Breanna Stewart (2015, 2016) and Paige Bueckers (2021).
At first, Serah Williams looked to be staying in Connecticut when the Sun drafted her in the third round, 33rd overall. But then she was dealt to the Portland Fire as part of a pre-arraigned trade and will now try to become the first Husky to play for the expansion franchise.
Caroline Ducharme lands training camp contract with Golden State Valkyries
Despite going undrafted on Monday night, Caroline Ducharme will still get a shot in the WNBA. On Wednesday, the Golden State Valkyries signed her to a training camp contract.
Although Ducharme only appeared in 25 of 39 games while averaging 7.5 minutes in her final season at UConn, Golden State is hoping it can help her re-find the immense potential she showed during her freshman season.
Ayanna Patterson commits to Kentucky
After entering the transfer portal last week, Ayanna Patterson has a new home. According to On3’s Talia Goodman, the rising redshirt junior committed to Kentucky. Last season, Kenny Brooks’ squad went 25-11 and earned a 5-seed in the NCAA Tournament, going as far as the Sweet Sixteen before falling to top-seeded Texas.
While Patterson couldn’t crack UConn’s rotation, the Wildcats should have plenty of minutes up for grabs after they had four players taken in the 2026 WNBA Draft.
