Here’s a spoiler: In five months — after a 32-game regular season, the Big East Tournament and four victories in the NCAA Tournament — UConn will head to Columbus for the Final Four.
Mark it down now. Book your flights. Find a place to stay. Start saving money for tickets. And grab your favorite lucky charm to ensure injuries don’t ruin everything.
That is the floor for these Huskies — as it is practically every season. They’ve been to every Final Four since 2008 with just one exception (2023, when everybody got hurt). Even Geno Auriemma has acknowledged UConn has a system down for reaching the national semifinal.
“The culture of your program and what your program stands for… can probably get you to the regionals just about every year,” he said. “Once you get there, that doesn’t mean diddly. Now, you better have that guy. They get you from there (the regionals) to the next thing (the Final Four).”
The Huskies certainly have “that guy” this season: Sarah Strong, the reigning National Player of the Year. They have another, too: Blanca Quiñonez, Strong’s newly-appointed sidekick. Those two can single-handedly get UConn through the regionals to the Final Four.
In fact, they already have. Last season, those two put the Huskies on their backs in Fort Worth, scoring a combined 78 points across the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight. Everyone else had 55 points in that same span.
The duo should be even better this year. UConn expects Strong’s junior season to be her best one yet while Quiñonez — despite missing the entire offseason while recovering from shoulder surgery — has been tabbed as the team’s new No. 2 scorer at every possible opportunity by Auriemma.
But they won’t decide the fate of the Huskies’ season by themselves. It’s not 2004 anymore. There’s too much talent in the sport now for a couple of players to carry a team to a national championship the way Diana Taurasi did on her own as a junior and senior.
Instead, Strong and Quiñonez will set UConn’s floor. So long as those two are healthy, the Huskies will reach the Final Four.
It’s up to the other 11 players to decide whether they’ll go further than that. That group, not Strong and Quiñonez, will set UConn’s ceiling.
