Why Geno wants Sarah Strong to pass less

UConn moves the ball better than any other team in the nation but the head coach wants his top player to call her own number more.

On Saturday against Seton Hall, UConn women’s basketball notched an assist on 25 of 31 baskets — a rate of 80.6, tied for its second-highest mark of the season. The Huskies are on pace for one of their best passing seasons ever.

In the Her Hoop Stats Era (2009-present), their 24.3 assists per game would be their top mark in a single campaign — one full assist better than the next closest squad — while their assist rate of 69.3 would rank second only to 2016-17 (71.3).

While unselfishness and a willingness to pass have always been hallmarks of the program, Geno Auriemma suggested that the current squad may be taking it too far.

“One of the not-so-perky perks, I guess, of coaching women's basketball at UConn, you get a lot of unselfish players,” he said. “It's a good problem to have that they want to be very unselfish, but there's a fine line.”
