UConn’s preseason is over. On Sunday, the Huskies ran past the Army Black Knights 86-50 in their final exhibition game, though it wasn’t a wire-to-wire blowout. Army came out strong and built a 15-7 lead midway through the opening quarter. The visitors made six of their nine first shots while UConn started just 2-10 from the field.
“We kind of wait around for somebody to get us going offensively,” Geno Auriemma said afterwards.
No single player needed to step up, though. Instead, a collective effort did the job. Jovana Popovic ended a brief scoring drought with a 3-pointer. Sarah Strong followed up with another triple. Popovic connected from deep again, then KK Arnold found the basket on a layup and Ashlynn Shade sank three free throws.
That (at least from Strong’s basket on) combined for an 11-0 run to end the first quarter, which put the Huskies in the driver’s seat for good.
“The thing that makes us good is when everybody touches the ball and we give ourselves opportunities. We're not very good when the ball gets stagnant and only two people are playing two-man game and everybody else is standing watching,” Auriemma said. “Once we got everybody involved (good things happened).”
UConn ended up outscoring Army 32-7 in the second quarter — more points than Army had total to that point (25). Outside of that big period, the Black Knights held their own. The margin over the other three quarters was just 11 in favor of the hosts.
“We prepared for a long time. They had Texas on Monday, we had practice on Monday,” Army coach Katie Kuester said. “We were able to prepare properly for their press, for their defensive schemes, what we wanted to do offensively execution-wise, and we felt great about it. You could see it in that first 10 (minutes) and then that second quarter… was rough. Then we were on an upwards climb.”
Blanca Quiñonez (shoulder) and Marine Dursus (foot) both missed Sunday’s win — and with it, the entire preseason — while Morgan Cheli (undisclosed) remained sidelined for the second straight contest. Auriemma said all three have entered the “return to play protocol,” but he didn’t know if any of them would be ready for the start of the regular season.
Much like the first exhibition against Syracuse, pretty much everyone performed well for the Huskies. Sarah Strong led the way with a dominant 19 points in 23 minutes while Allie Ziebell (13 points thanks to a team-best three made 3-pointers) and Jovana Popovic (10 points) also reached double figures. It was a balanced night offensively — unlike the win over Texas, when Strong, Shade and Popovic combined for 72.3 percent of the team’s points — as all 10 players scored for UConn.
Ultimately, there were no big revelations from the Huskies’ performance against Army. It just reinforced what we already saw during the Syracuse game, the Texas game, or both. So instead of diving into the nitty-gritty of a relatively meaningless contest (in terms of big-picture takeaways), let’s zoom out and look at what we learned over the entire preseason.
Geno’s concerns
May as well start with the head coach. After the game, Auriemma provided his personal assessment of UConn’s preseason.
