In 2021-22, UConn played its lone exhibition on Nov. 7, started the regular season on Nov. 14 and didn’t get its third contest in until Nov. 20. Fast forward five years and the Huskies already have three games under their belt before November even begins. On Sunday, they finished their exhibition slate with an 86-50 win over Army and now turn their attention to the regular season, which begins with Cornell on Nov. 2.

While the three preseason games didn’t paint a complete picture — Blanca Quiñonez (shoulder) and Marine Dursus (foot) didn’t play in any of them — there’s less mystery surrounding the Huskies at this point in the calendar compared to most previous years.

So as the new campaign approaches, let’s take stock of where all 13 members of UConn’s roster stand after three exhibitions.

Stock up

Jovana Popovic

The breakout star of UConn’s preseason, Popovic was the team’s second-best player (behind Sarah Strong) by a wide margin. She averaged 14.0 points on 59.3 percent shooting, 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 31.0 minutes while playing with a steadiness far beyond her years. Entering the season, it looked like the Huskies’ roster would be parceled into the stars (Strong and Quiñonez) and the role players (everyone else). But if the last few weeks are any indication, Popovic is much closer to joining the former group than the latter.

Sarah Strong

No need to overthink this. Strong checked off all the necessary boxes during the preseason. She performed at the level UConn expects her to (albeit with a few more fouls and turnovers than usual), out-dueled Texas star Madison Booker and has clearly established herself as the vocal leader.

Ashlynn Shade

Shade was a model of consistency in the Huskies’ exhibitions. She scored between nine and 11 points each time out and made plenty of plays that don’t show up on the stat sheet. But crucially, Shade knocked down open shots with regularity — which wasn’t the case a year ago. She went 10-18 (55.6 percent) overall and 5-10 (50 percent) from three in the preseason.

Three footnotes to Daniel's "Stock watch"

  • Sarah spent the summer allowing her legs to strengthen: could they wear down in a long season? (A worry) Also, she was a less efficient scorer than Jovana or Ash: was last year her peak? (Conceivable)

  • In every game Ash12 should shoot her brains out until she finds her scoring groove and her confidence then rises; too often her first impulse is to pass (unlike Popovic, whose first impulse is to shoot). Shoot the damn ball, Ash! The pros won't draft a Mother Teresa.

  • Geno should commit to Vukosa. If Jana starts, give her a few loyal minutes and then send Big O out there for big minutes. Olivia has championship-level potential; Jana doesn't.
