For all the success of the UConn women’s basketball program, none of its alumni had ever won the WNBA 3-point contest — until Friday. Azzi Fudd made history by becoming the first Husky and the first rookie to come out on top in the competition. She put up 24 points on 17-27 shooting in the first round but then dispatched the Portland Fire’s Bridget Carleton with a dominant 30-point, 21-27 performance in the final.

After Fudd was crowned champion, KK Arnold and Kelis Fisher rushed the court to celebrate with her while Paige Bueckers, Kaitlyn Chen and Sarah Strong looked on.

Even though Marine Dursus never paid much attention to college basketball back home in France, she knew she couldn’t pass up an opportunity to play at UConn.

“It’s one of the best places to be in the US,” Dursus said. “It’s UConn, and Geno is one of the best coaches. I would say that everything here is made for success.”

“UConn was the best choice for me for the basketball,” she added later. “Because I’m here more for the basketball.”

Most years, Geno Auriemma gets a pretty good feel for how good his team could be during summer workouts. But one offseason that sticks out in particular?

“One of the best June's we ever had — I have to tell you — was when Lou Lopez Sénéchal came in,” Auriemma said. “We looked out there and we had Paige, Azzi and Lou. I thought, ‘Man, this is going to be really, really good.’ And it was unbelievable. The whole month was unbelievable.”

“Then Paige tears her ACL in August.”

Of all UConn’s injury-plagued seasons from 2021-24, the 2022-23 campaign is probably the biggest what-if. Had everyone stayed healthy, their backcourt would’ve featured Bueckers, Fudd, Lopez Sénéchal, Nika Mühl and Caroline Ducharme with a frontcourt that included Dorka Juhász, Aaliyah Edwards and Aubrey Griffin.

Good luck beating that group.

Instead, Bueckers missed the entire season, Fudd and Ducharme were rarely 100 percent and the Huskies ultimately went down in the Sweet Sixteen.
