Geno broadcasts Wings-Liberty game

In honor of the WNBA’s 30th season, Geno Auriemma served as the color analyst for the Dallas Wings’ win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday night alongside Robin Roberts and Beth Mowins. During the league’s first two years, Roberts and Auriemma were the primary broadcast duo.

Auriemma had plenty of fun goading Breanna Stewart, Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd during shootaround. Then, during a pregame interview with Stewart and Bueckers, he declared, “I’m telling you, you guys are gonna be surprised by how good I am.” He also joked that, “the more I talk lately, the more trouble I get into, so I gotta be very careful with what I say.”

Stewart said she planned to go back and re-watch the contest to listen to Auriemma’s commentary. Bueckers had no interest in doing the same.

Ultimately, Auriemma did well in the role. He explained things in a simple, concise manner and had no problem hammering the Liberty for a bad first half. Even though Auriemma had three of his former players on the court — all No. 1 picks too — he spent the entire contest gushing over Dallas forward (and former Notre Dame star) Jessica Shepard. She recorded a triple-double behind 22 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists, which led Auriemma to say she might be “the most important player in the league right now.”

"I'm here singing the praises of a Notre Dame kid," he joked on SportsCenter afterwards. "She was unbelievable. It was worth it just to watch her play tonight."

The freshman guard out of Serbia made an immediate impression on her new teammates by passing UConn’s conditioning test on her first try. Everything else — like getting used to the American style of basketball and learning the team’s schemes — has taken a bit more time.

Still, Popovic is excited to be a Husky.

“UConn is the best opportunity for a young player who wants to play basketball and, at the same time, finish school,” Popovic said. “I think here is the best place for everything.”

Last Thursday, Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd took the court in Connecticut for what could be the final time in their respective careers. They made sure to put on a show for the near-capacity crowd.

The pair helped the Dallas Wings erase a 14-point second-half deficit and secure an 86-83 victory over the Connecticut Sun. The Huskies took over the fourth quarter as Bueckers and Fudd traded baskets with Aaliyah Edwards. Bueckers piled up 11 points on 5-5 shooting in the final frame en route to a 25-point night.

“She's just different,” Dallas coach Jose Fernandez said. “She's such a competitor and a winner. She just refuses to lose. Certain guys don't want the ball in their hands at the end, don't want to take the big shot. She never shies away from the big moment, go-to moment.”

If Bueckers has her way, it won’t be her final time playing in the state. Afterwards, she pushed for a contest at Gampel Pavilion in the future.

Since 2002, every WNBA All-Star Game has featured at least one UConn player as a starter. That streak will continue in 2026 as Paige Bueckers, Breanna Stewart and Gabby Williams were named WNBA All-Star starters.

Those will be the Huskies’ only representatives in Chicago, though. No others — namely, Azzi Fudd — were selected as reserves.
