UConn begins official practice this week
While UConn held an open practice at Sacred Heart on Sunday (more on that in a moment), the team starts official practice this week, according to Geno Auriemma. The coach didn’t provide an exact day, though.
“We haven't done a lot. We haven't been together much,” he said on Sunday. “We start this week for real.”
All 32 dates on UConn’s 2026-27 slate are out. Last Thursday, the Big East released its complete schedule and the Huskies also revealed their home arena designations.
Notable dates include the Big East opener on Nov. 20 versus Seton Hall, a trip to Madison Square Garden to play St. John’s on Jan. 24 and senior day on Feb. 28 against Butler.
UConn will split its home schedule evenly between Gampel Pavilion in Storrs and PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford. The Huskies will host Army (exhibition), Iowa, UNLV, Creighton, DePaul, Villanova, Xavier and Butler in Storrs, while Texas (exhibition), Cornell, Seton Hall, Tennessee, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence and St. John's will travel to Hartford.
Tip-off times and television information will be released in the coming weeks.
We got our first glimpse at the 2026-27 Huskies on Sunday during an open practice at Sacred Heart. While it’s tough to glean too much from the 1:20-long session, there were a few key takeaways:
Morgan Cheli, Marine Dursus, Blanca Quiñonez and Allie Ziebell all sat out due to various injuries, though Auriemma indicated that none of them are dealing with anything long-term.
Jana El Alfy made a surprise run to the 3-point contest final.
Olivia Vukosa impressed with a monster day on the glass during the scrimmage.

After the open practice on Sunday, Auriemma spoke to the media and confirmed that UConn would’ve preferred to have at least one non-conference game in the new year, but couldn’t make it happen.
“Unfortunately, it's getting harder to schedule those (marquee non-conference games) in January and February because all these teams play in leagues that have 20 teams. So I'm hopeful that, in the future, we can squeeze one in here or there,” he said.
Auriemma also discussed the gauntlet that the Huskies will face this season and explained why he won’t worry about the team’s record or NCAA Tournament seeding.
The Sun is about to set on the WNBA in Connecticut. On Thursday, the Connecticut Sun will play their final game after 23 seasons in the state. After that, the franchise will relocate to Houston, where it’ll become the Comets.
