UConn begins summer workouts
Over the weekend, UConn’s players returned to campus for the start of summer workouts. Only 11 Huskies have made it to Storrs so far — Jovana Popovic is expected to arrive at the end of the week while Marine Dursus’s status is still up in the air.
“We’re hoping to find out more tomorrow,” Geno Auriemma said about the freshman from France on Wednesday.
The session, which runs for a little more than a month, helps the newcomers get acclimated to both the school and the program while providing the returners an opportunity for valuable development. UConn is limited to eight hours of required basketball activities per week, so the players spend much of their time playing pickup basketball together.
Morgan Cheli returns
After missing the entire 2025-26 season while recovering from ankle surgery, Morgan Cheli is finally healthy and will be on the floor for summer workouts.
“She's worked really, really hard. She's had a tough go of it, trying to get back on the court,” Auriemma said. “She looks great and the more I watch — I watched her towards the end of the season, doing some individuals — it reminded [me] of all the different things that she can do.”
Meanwhile, the head coach confirmed that Blanca Quiñonez will be sidelined for the June session. That doesn’t come as much of a surprise after the rising sophomore underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in her left shoulder last month.
“It’s typical UConn,” Auriemma quipped. “We can’t have everything we want. You trade one (Cheli) for the other (Quiñonez).”
Trip to Tallahassee pushed back
UConn has a new opening on its non-conference schedule. On Wednesday, Auriemma revealed that the Huskies will not travel to Florida State in 2026-27. The Seminoles visited Gampel Pavilion this past season.
“They wanted to push it off, so I’m not sure when it's going to be rescheduled,” he said.
As of now, UConn will host Iowa (Nov. 8), travel to Michigan (Nov. 5), Louisville, Ohio State and Notre Dame), then take on South Carolina (Nov. 24 at Mohegan Sun Arena), Duke (Nov. 28 at TD Garden), Maryland (Dec. 5 at Barclays Center) and LSU (date TBA in Nashville) on neutral courts in the non-conference.
