UConn wins Big East Tournament

After stacking up three victories by an average of 44.3 points, UConn claimed its sixth straight Big East Tournament title on Monday. The Huskies have now won 31 conference tournament crowns in program history.

Sarah Strong won Most Outstanding Player while Azzi Fudd and KK Arnold landed on the all-tournament team.

Big East Tournament extends partnership with Mohegan Sun Arena

During the championship game on Monday, the Big East announced that the women’s basketball tournament will remain at Mohegan Sun Arena for at least three more years. The casino has hosted the Big East Tournament ever since UConn returned to the league in 2020. Prior to that, it was the home of the AAC Tournament during the Huskies’ seven-year tenure in the conference.

“Oh yeah, absolutely,” Geno Auriemma said when asked if the tournament is in the right place. “When you have that many people coming out year after year, when you have people here at 11:30 at night watching the game, the people here at Mohegan know how to run events. It’s a fantastic facility. It's a great place for people for a weekend… So yeah, I can't imagine it being anywhere else, to be honest with you.”

Selection Sunday up next

UConn captured the Big East’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and now will have to wait nearly a week before learning who it’ll face in the big dance. Selection Sunday is set for Mar. 15 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The Huskies are guaranteed to be a 1-seed in one of the Fort Worth Regionals (unless they opt to go to Sacramento for some reason), though the big question is whether they’ll be the top overall seed.

UConn held that distinction in the first two bracket reveals, though some believe it should be UCLA. The Bruins are 31-1, went undefeated in the Big Ten and destroyed Iowa in the conference tournament championship, 96-45. They also have 18 Quad 1 wins — double the Huskies’ total.

Even with that, UConn is still No. 1 in the NET, Torvik rankings and Her Hoop Stats rating. ELO has UCLA as the top team.

Being the No. 1 overall seed isn’t just a matter of bragging rights. They also get an extra day of rest between the regionals and the Final Four — assuming they make it that far.

Will UConn be the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament?

Inês Bettencourt is heading back to the NCAA Tournament. The former UConn guard helped Gonzaga win the WCC Tournament title, punching her ticket back to the big dance. Bettencourt went to two NCAA Tournaments with the Huskies, including a Final Four appearance in 2024. She’s averaging 6.4 points, 3.0 assists and 1.5 assists while starting every game for the Zags this season.

Meanwhile, eight former and future Huskies are competing in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers around the globe this week:

  • USA: Paige Bueckers

  • France: Gabby Williams

  • Hungary: Dorka Juhász

  • Canada: Kia Nurse, Aaliyah Edwards

  • Croatia: Nika Mühl, Olivia Vukosa

  • South Sudan: Piath Gabriel

Unfortunately, Mühl reportedly went down with a right knee injury on Wednesday. There’s no official update on her status, though it didn’t sound good. Mühl previously suffered a torn ACL in her left knee back in 2024.

The week ahead

Sunday: UConn has no games this week, though it’ll learn its path to a 13th national championship when the NCAA Tournament bracket is revealed this upcoming Sunday. That’ll air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET.
